Passage ThreeBeforethe grass has thickened on the roadside and leaves have started growing on thetrees is a perfect time to look around and see just how dirty Britain hasbecome. The pavements are stained with chewing gum and the ditches are full ofdiscarded fast food packets. Years ago I remember traveling abroad and being saddenedby the plastic bags and discarded bottles. Nowadays, Britain seems to look atleast as bad. What has gone wrong?Theproblem is that the rubbish created by our increasingly mobile lives lasts alot longer than before. If it is not cleared up and properly thrown away, itstays in the undergrowth(下层灌木) for years.Itis estimated that 10 billion plastic bags have been given to shoppers. Thesewill take anything from 100 to 1,000 years to rot. However, it is not as ifthere is no solution to this. A few years ago, the Irish government introduceda tax on non-recyclable carrier bags and in three months reduced their use by90%. When he was a minister, Michael Meacher attempted to introduce a similararrangement in Britain. The plastics industry protested, of course. However, they need not have bothered; the idea was killed before it could draw breath, leaving supermarkets free to give away plastic bags.Whatis clearly necessary right now is some sort of combined action, both individualand collective, before it is too late. The alternative is to continueslidingdownhill until we have a country that looks like a vast rubbish tip. Wemay well be at the tipping point. Yet we know that people respond to theirenvironment. If things around them are clean and tidy, people behave cleanlyand tidily. If they are surrounded by rubbish, they behave like rubbish. Now,much of Britain looks pretty dirty. What will it look like in five years?26. Whatmight be the best title for the passage?A. Plastic Bags. B. EnvironmentProtection.C. Dirty Britain. D. Rubbish Disposal.27. Theplastics industry in Britain protested because ______.A. a tax was proposed on non-recyclablecarrier bagsB. supermarkets no longer gave away plasticbagsC. they were blamed for causing plasticpollutionD. the government did not support them28. Whichof the following best describes the author’s outlook on the environment?A. Optimistic. B. Confused.C. Concerned. D. Indifferent.30. Thepurpose of the article is to ______.A. encourage the public to take actionagainst rubbishB. discourage people from supporting theplastics industryC. call on the government to protect theenvironmentD. encourage supermarkets to give awayrecyclable bags
